Installation Overview

Server Setup

A typical installation of Bentley OpenUtilities Designer consists of the following steps. These procedures should be performed by an administrator or other user who is knowledgeable about Oracle DBA concepts and has the necessary administrative privileges. To obtain detailed procedures for installing Oracle and GIS software, consult the documentation supplied with these products.

  1. Install Oracle 8i (8.1.7) or 9i (9.2.0.1.0) on the server.
  2. Create a new Oracle database using the following initialization parameters:

    Db_block_size

    8192 bytes

    Open_cursors:

    25000 (50 * Max users)

    Processes

    220

    Remote_OS_Authentication

    TRUE

    Db_block_buffers

    3000

    Shared_pool_size

    >20000000 (20 million)

    OS_Authent_Prefix

    '' (empty string)

    Note: For Unix or VMS, set Authentication Prefix to ' '.
  3. Install the Bentley OpenUtilities Designer data tables (for new installations, this step involves a batch process with a .dmp file). See “Loading the Bentley OpenUtilities Designer Tables”.
  4. Install the GIS software on the server.
  5. Register the GIS license.
  6. Install the GIS image and datastore.
  7. Install Bentley OpenUtilities Designer and ED Server on the server that will run ED Server. This is an automated process handled by the installation wizard (see “Installing Bentley OpenUtilities Designer”).

Client Setup

  1. Install Oracle 8i (8.1.7, Client Edition) on each client machine.
  2. Install the GIS software on each client machine.
  3. Install Bentley OpenUtilities Designer on each client machine. This is an automated process handled by the installation wizard (see “Installing Bentley OpenUtilities Designer”).
